In continuance with a position drifting away from decades of pacifism in the wake of World War II, Japan's Prime Minister is seeking to join NATO's missile building consortium.
Sources said the U.S.
Navy is encouraging the proposed multinational defense project as a gesture to pave the way for future partnerships throughout Asia.
The 12-country consortium oversees development of the SeaSparrow missile; should Japan be accepted they would also share in the cost.
Designed by Raytheon and General Dynamics, the missile system is a ship-born weapon designed to intercept and destroy incoming hostile missiles or aircraft.
Reuters reported that Japanese naval officers met with NATO at The Hague in May to learn more about the consortium.
